We start with the most important designers of the 1922 Avant Garde, Adolphe Appia and Edward Gordon Craig.
In the DNA catalogue you may find the other 93 participants of the 1922 exhibition

VR Exhibition room #1

Adolphe Appia

Appia is best known for his many scenic designs for Wagner’s operas. He rejected painted two-dimensional sets for three-dimensional "living" sets because he believed that shade was as necessary as light to form a connection between the actor and the setting of the performance in time and space. Through the use of control of light intensity, colour and manipulation, Appia created a new perspective of scene design and stage lighting.

VR Exhibition room #2

Edward Gordon Craig

Craig asserted that the director was "the true artist of the theatre" and, controversially, suggested viewing actors as no more important than marionettes. He designed and built elaborately symbolic sets; for instance, a set composed of his patented movable screens for the Moscow Art Theatre production of Hamlet. He was also the editor and chief writer for the first international theatre magazine, The Mask

Rien Bekkers
The artwork is inspired on the human body and its methamorphoses into an endless possible appearances thanks to the costumes, in theater and real life as well.

Without a moving actor or singer, a costume gains the characteristics of a monumental sculpture, it becomes an object.
"From a fantasy, an interest in the material and love for the craftsmanship, a shape, an atmosphere and a silhouette – which I hope raise wonder and intrigue – gradually come into being through modeling and experimenting."

Giant Hummingtop
One of the six instruments made fro the composition 'To You' by Peter Schat and Adrian Mitchell, from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The Toneclock

The glass windows made by the composer himself are presently owned by the Royal Conservatory in The Hague

What Schat discovered in 1982 is that there are exactly 12 possible triads in the chromatic universe, if one accepts any combination of two intervals as a triad.

Schat materialized his theory by installing a set of twelve leaded glass roof windows in his canal house in Amsterdam. The original set can now be seen in the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where Schat both studied and taught. But in the attractive spiral form in which the windows are hung there, they lost their function of being ‘a gateway to heaven’. Schat’s fascination for cloudscapes, celestial bodies and heaven itself was well-known; think of De Hemel (‘Heaven’), one of his tone-clock compositions.

Onze petitie
