THE theater museum reconstructed
Brief history
In 2022 it was 100 years ago that the very first International Theater Exhibition took place in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
October 2024 will mark 100 years since the Dutch Theater Association took the initiative to establish a Theater Museum. Four months later - in February 1925 - the foundation was a fact.
10 years ago the direct successor to that Theater Museum, Theater Institute Netherlands, was closed down by State Secretary and VVD member Halbe Zijlstra.
a new museum?
We may conclude that the present Dutch government does not intend to designate, let alone build, a new location for the restoration of the liquidated theater museum and institute.
The alternative?
The design and construction of the VR Theater Museum Scenography.World and 3 VR 'exhibitions' from 1922 to the present.

The Theatermuseum will be the new exterior, the façade of the museum that was liquidated in 2013, with an interior that accommodates exhibitions, concerts, performances, ballet and work contributed by the DNA members curated by Scenography.World.
Immersive stories 2025
The story of contemporary artists who reflect on the work, ideas and visions of 96 Avant Garde Artists from the 1920s and tell their own story on that basis. Their visions and new visual language may be shown in the VR spaces of the Stedelijk Museum.
A story that spans a hundred years of theater history, starting with the Avant Garde of 1922, followed by the jump to the present and 'onwards'.
It is the scenography, and in particular the visual language, that forms the core of this narrative.
Between storyboard and result, the immersive technology and the perhaps unwanted interference of AI will show us how visual language has changed in form and use. The contemporary scenographers, chosen for their multidisciplinary work, quality and visions, tell the story with their own imagery in the 2025 exhibition, in the same Stedelijk.

Zeer interessant initiatief. Via Otto van der Mieden hield ik enig contact. Helaas is Otto een half jaar gelden plots overleden. Ook Museum geelvinck tezamen met het Pianola Museum, Huis Midwoud en het Harmonium Museum Nederland (tezamen Geelvinck Muziek Musea) zijn bezig met de ongewisse toekomst. Tezamen beheren wij meer dan 600 historische complexe semi-immobiele toetsinstrumenten van de 18e t/m 20e eeuw; levend erfgoed, dat een graf dreigt te vinden in depots. Overigens ook nog 40.000 pianolarollen, een paar honderd meter vakliteratuur, bladmuziek en archieven (incl. audio/video), waaronder de bibliotheek van EPTA. Om ons heen zien wij kleine musea het bijzonder moeilijk hebben; ook voor de erfgoedgemeenschappen daarachter wordt de spoeling steeds dunner, niet in het minst door vergrijzing (en daarmee vastroesten, waardoor de hoognodige vernieuwing steeds moeilijker wordt). We zijn wel met verschillende initiatieven bezig, o.a. in het kader van de Faro Conventie. En verder zoeken wij naar samenwerking om naar alternatieven te kijken, waarbij we het over een totaal andere boeg gaan gooien. Zo hebben we een voorstel voor een broedplaats gedaan. Eveneens zien wij de kansen voor een (gedeeltelijk) virtuele opzet. Graag maken wij contact. Theater en muziek is immers nauw aan elkaar verbonden. Met vriendelijke groet!

Het is natuurlijk een schande dat iedere grote stag een voetbal stadion heeft maar er niet een plek is waar alle Nederlandse theater geschiedenis te zien is.

Theater bestaat alleen op het moment. Wat over blijft zijn de scripts, de kostuums en de opnames. Toen de internationaal vermaarde theatergroep Dogtroep begin deze eeuw ophield met bestaan hebben wij ons prachtige archief overgedragen aan het theater instituut. Dogtroep was een kind van haar tijd. Toch blijkt vaak dat het jonge makers nog steeds kan inspireren. Maar haar verleden is verdwenen in de verloren erfenis van het TIN.

Het Theater Instituut en museum moet terugkomen om de zwervende archieven van de NL theater geschiedenis terug te brengen en voor publiek beschikbaar te maken. Ik ben een van de medeoprichters van Dogtroep, heb 17 jaar van mijn leven gegeven om daar iets moois voor een breed publiek van te maken. Tegen alle verdrukking in, zijn we daar goed in geslaagd. Het werk van Dries Verhoeven en de Warme Winkel wordt met Dogtroep als interdisciplinair theater in verband gebracht. Een groep als Bot komt aantoonbaar voort uit Dogtroep. Wij hebben destijds met enkele generaties Dogtroepers het papieren, video en fotoarchief klaar gemaakt voor overdracht aan het Theaterinstituut. Het moet weer beschikbaar komen voor de generatie vernieuwers van theater van nu!

Belangrijk initiatief in deze schrale tijden waarin het geheugen plaats maakt voor Wikipedia, tik-tok fragmentjes van een paar seconden cultuur maken en kunstenaars op facebook hopen op een snel duimpje omhoog. Een beschaving zonder cultuur is geen beschaving, cultuur zonder geheugen en connectie met traditie is geen cultuur!
