Poster serie for an art fair (KunstRai). For this series Anthon Beeke chose masks with artists hiding behind them. These ‘models’ are recognisable if the artist’s work is known.

In 1997, an unemployed system administrator in a ‘psychosis about fascism, religion and abstract art’ used a Stanley knife to vandalise Cathedra by Barnett Newman. Years before, he had already vandalised Who’s afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III by Newman, also in Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum. The culprit had a partiality to Impressionism, with cosy houses and dancing people. According to him, abstract art brought death and cancer. This poster – a very damaged red, yellow and blue museum director Rudi Fuchs – shows how vulnerable art is.

The red blood and the yellow and blue bandage refer to the destruction of ‘Who is afraid of red, yellow and blue’, painted by Barnett Newman.
