Ilias

For this poster Anthon used part of Toscani’s poster. Oliviero Toscani became world famous with his photos for Benneton. Photos that had nothing to do with fashion, but everything to do with war, violence, the threat of aids and the despair of refugees. For instance he photographed the blood soaked clothing of a dead soldier in Kosovo. Anthon Beeke borrowed this image and had the text sewn onto the original Benetton poster. This poster is about flirting with suffering. That’s what Homer did, it’s what Toscani did and Anthon is doing it too. Anthon thought his design just as tasteless as that of Toscani. There is a real bullet-hole in the billboard poster that is visible at night, when the billboard is illuminated.
